How to be a Calm & Assertive Pack Leader

Posted on by admin in Dog Boarding, Dog Daycare, Dog Sitting, Dog Sitting, Pet Sitting, Pet Sitting | Comments Off on How to be a Calm & Assertive Pack Leader

Dogs use constant energy to communicate. Energy is what I call being-ness; it is who and what you are in every moment. Dogs don’t know each other by name, but by the energy they project and the activities they share. They know humans in the same way. As humans, we too are communicating with energy – whether we realize it or not. And, though we may attempt to persuade, explain, and rationalize all day long, these energy signals are the only messages getting across to our dogs. The first energy that a puppy experiences after birth is mom’s calm, assertive energy. Later, the puppy will follow a pack leader who projects the same calm, assertive energy out of association. As pack followers, dogs return a calm, submissive energy that completes the pack balance. It is important to understand that most dogs are born to be submissive, because there can only …

How To Go Camping with Your Dog!

Posted on by admin in Dog Boarding, Dog Daycare, Dog Sitting, Dog Sitting, Pet Sitting, Pet Sitting | Comments Off on How To Go Camping with Your Dog!

When John Steinbeck traveled with Charley, his standard poodle, the result was one of my favorite books. Fifty years after its publishing it’s still a great read, and it wouldn’t have been what it is without Charley. The companionship of a dog can be one of the most rewarding experiences for a wilderness traveler. As opposed to humans, they are quiet, low-maintenance, and easy to please. Dogs cannot be jaded; everything is new to them. If you don’t believe me, watch your dog at a rest stop. The pet exercise area is like a giant olfactory newspaper, and my dogs must read every article, especially the ones left behind by an interesting female. But like anything, the key to a successful trip is preparation, and then more preparation. There are many more considerations in your wilderness trip prep work when taking a dog, and failure in one of them can …

If my dog is attacked at the dog park, what should I do?

Posted on by admin in Dog Boarding, Dog Daycare, Dog Sitting, Dog Sitting, Pet Sitting, Pet Sitting | Comments Off on If my dog is attacked at the dog park, what should I do?

UNPROVOKED ATTACKS ARE ACTUALLY EXTREMELY rare but very dangerous. When they occur, there is usually a considerable size difference between the two dogs—the attacker is large and the victim small—and the attack is usually eerily silent, rapid, and often predatory. Often both the attacker and the victim are un-socialized. Sometimes the attacker picks up and carries and shakes the victim. This is a dire emergency: scream blue murder! Create as much noise as possible to convince other people to shout and help chase down the dog and get him to release the victim. I once chased down a neighbour’s German Shepherd to rescue a Pekingnese. Sadly, the Peke died three days later. Dog fights, on the other hand are extremely common but rarely dangerous. Dog fights occur between all dogs but most usually between male dogs less than two years of age. Most people assume one dog is a dominant …

Homemade Dog Food: What it’s all about!

Posted on by admin in Dog Boarding, Dog Daycare, Dog Sitting, Dog Sitting, Pet Sitting, Pet Sitting, Uncategorized | Comments Off on Homemade Dog Food: What it’s all about!

When suppertime rolls around, there’s nothing like a healthy home-cooked meal. This is true not only for the human members of your family, but for your dog as well. Cooking for your canine companion has many benefits, including fewer preservatives and additives, more varied and potentially better ingredients and, of course, more interest for the canine palate. Homemade meals may even make it possible to feed your dog well for less. A 15- pound bag of high-end dry dog food costs approximately $42, and a 5.5 oz. can of high-end wet food runs approximately $2. Feeding a medium-sized dog two cans of wet mixed with two cups of dry food costs about $5 per day. That doesn’t include the treats, bones and tidbits that inevitably make their way into her tummy! Compare that with four cups of Puppy Stew (recipe here) at $2.25 per day. Add the cost of a …

Dog Friendly Restaurants in Toronto This Summer!!!

Posted on by admin in Dog Boarding, Dog Daycare, Dog Sitting, Dog Sitting, Pet Sitting, Pet Sitting | Comments Off on Dog Friendly Restaurants in Toronto This Summer!!!

What’s better than a pint on the patio in the summer sun with friends? Well, a pint on the patio in the summer sun with all your friends, of course. Naturally, I’m referring to our furry pals. While dogs aren’t technically allowed on Toronto patios that serve food or drinks, pet owners eventually come to which places are more accommodating than others in terms offering water, treats, or simply smiles tossed a panting dog’s way. The best pet-friendly patios also have convenient or shady tie-up spots, perfect if you have a normal dog who doesn’t cry and whine and choke herself trying to clamber onto your lap. Sigh. For all of you leaders of the pack who didn’t somehow foster extreme separation anxiety in your dog, check out this list. We asked our Twitter followers to name the dog-friendliest patios in Toronto, and here are some of the responses, in …

Common Canine Ailments: Kennel Cough

Posted on by admin in Dog Boarding, Dog Daycare, Dog Sitting, Dog Sitting, Pet Sitting, Pet Sitting | Comments Off on Common Canine Ailments: Kennel Cough

Kennel cough, the common name given to infectious canine tracheobronchitis, is a highly contagious respiratory disease among dogs. As the name suggests, it is typified by inflammation of the trachea and bronchi. This disease is found throughout the world and is known to infect a high percentage of dogs at least once during their lifetime. It is also sometimes referred to as bordetellosis. Young puppies often suffer the most severe complications that can result from this disease since they have immature immune systems. Also at increased risk are older dogs, who may have decreased immune capabilities, pregnant bitches, who also have lowered immunity, and dogs with preexisting respiratory diseases. SYMPTOMS A persistent cough is the most common symptom Retching Watery nasal discharge In mild cases, dogs are often active and eating normally In severe cases, symptoms progress and can include pneumonia, inappetence, fever, lethargy and even death CAUSES Some of …
